How Dental Insurance Works

When reviewing your dental insurance plan, you will find that coverage is available for preventive and restorative treatment. Cosmetic dentistry is often not included because it is considered non-essential. However, there are exceptions. In most cases, however, you can expect your plan to follow the 100-80-50 rule, which includes full coverage for preventive care (100%) and partial coverage for minor and major restorative care (50-80%). Dental fillings, dental crowns, root canals, tooth extractions, dentures, dental bridges, and similar services are considered restorative treatments.

What is the Difference Between Dental and Medical Insurance?

Dental insurance is commonly used to reward patients who seek preventive care. This is why most plans offer 80-100% coverage for dental exams and cleanings. The level of savings you can expect will be reduced should you require restorative care.

Medical insurance works differently in that it offers greater savings after an injury or illness occurs. When you consider your general wellness visits versus hospitalizations, you can expect your insurance to offer greater coverage for the latter.

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network

If you are unsure what the terms in-network and out-of-network mean, you’re not alone. Fortunately, our team is here to offer a brief explanation.

In-Network

When you choose an in-network dentist, you are opting to see someone who has pre-negotiated their terms and fees with a particular dental insurance company. This means you pay less when receiving preventive and restorative treatment.

Barr Family Dentistry is pleased to be in-network with the following plans:

  • Cigna
  • Delta Dental
  • MetLife
  • Ameritas
  • BlueCross BlueShield
  • Guardian
  • UnitedHealthcare
  • Humana
  • Aetna

Out-of-Network

If we are not in-network with your dental insurance, this means we are considered out-of-network. Although we may not be partnered with your plan, we will still file all the necessary paperwork and claims to help you obtain the maximum reimbursement for treatment.
